Western Reserve Foundation awards $7,000 grant to O.H.I.O.
A non-profit Lorain County agency is ringing in the new year with a $7,000 grant for AIDS education.
The Western Reserve AIDS Foundation in Cleveland has awarded the one-year grant to the Ohio Human Interest Organization, Inc., in Lorain, effective January 1, 1990.
O.H.I.O. Vice Chairperson John White said the agency will split the grant into two parts. Most of the grant will pay for a ten-hour-a-week staff person who will coordinate AIDS volunteer activities and spearhead on-
going fundraising events for the agency. The remaining monies will cover the cost of setting up an AIDS education exhibit at the Lorain County Fair this
summer.
White said information at the booth will target the rural areas of Lorain, Huron, Erie and Richland counties with a newly-designed program, called "Rural AIDS Information Service," or RAISE.
The Ohio Human Interest Organization can be contacted at P.O. Box 167, Lorain, Ohio 44052.
New shows at 2 women's bars
Two women's bars in Akron and Cleveland will soon be celebrating Opening Night Preview II and III respectively, brought to them by a new entertainment company, PLU Productions.
The opening nights will kick off a new partnership between the bars and the director of PLU, Lori King, who plans to bring quality women's entertainment into the two bars at least once a month.
The Roseto Club in Akron and the 5-Cent Decision in Cleveland will be hosting the hour-long shows February 17 and March 3, featuring two women comedians (including fire-breathing and juggling), one woman guitar player, a lip-sync to three songs by Sinead O'Connor, and a lesbian story, written and read by King.
PLU Productions hosted Opening Night Preview I at Brady's Cafe in Kent on November 4. Brady's, a cafe known for its coffee, is PLU's home base for King, who is currently the co-program director for the Kent Gay-Lesbian Foundation.
"After putting together many shows
for KGLF, I realized the wealth of talent in Ohio, particularly in Kent," King said. "Although we offer entertainment on campus, I became aware that not everyone wants to attend a guaranteed activity in a straight atmosphere, like the Rathskeller in the Student Center where we hold our annual Halloween Ball and the All Campus Variety Show on March
16.
"So I started PLU at Brady's, and when that was successful, I decided to expand into the lesbian community, which is where my heart really is," she added. "I'm really excited about being able to offer our community nights of entertainment where they are most comfortable."
The show at the Roseto Club, 627 Arlington, in Akron, will begin at 9:30 p.m. February 17, and the 5-Cent Decision, 4365 State Rd, in Cleveland, will open their doors at 7 p.m. for the 8 p.m. show March 3. Both shows are $3.00

Human Rights Campaign Fund
to start family registry
In the wake of the failure of San Francisco's domestic partnership law last November, the Human Rights Campaign Fund has decided to develop a nationwide family registry program to build grass roots support for the concept of lesbian and gay families.
As the largest national group fighting for lesbian and gay rights, HRCF hopes the registry will play an important role in building national support for domestic partnership laws and changes in federal law to end discrimination against lesbian and gay relationships.
"We can no longer wait for lesbian and gay men in long-term loving relationships to be validated and acknowledged by this country's legislative and political bodies," HRCF executive director Tim McFeeley stated in announcing plans for a National Family Registry. "The lesbian and gay community is going to have to lay the groundwork first."
"As we have in so many other ways, our community is going to provide for itself," McFeeley said. "HRCF will maintain the record of gay and lesbian families who wish to be so identified.
Of course, the national registry will not include all gay and lesbian families, but it will provide a central repository of records for families who wish to be a part of the national registry and want to be known as a visible and proud family unit," he said.
"Many lesbians and gays have created true families, with strong bonds of love and commitment that withstand society's definition of the family to encompass lesbian and gay relationships, we must provide support and validation to our own community," McFeeley said.
Along with Kathleen Stoll, director of HRCF's Lesbian Issues and Outreach Project, McFeeley announced the creation of the registry which will be maintained by the Campaign Fund in Washington. "Self identified lesbian and gay families-defined broadly as our
most important close relationships-can register with the National Family Registry," Stoll stated.
"These family units are not limited to traditional domestic partnerships or two-person couples," she noted. ""We want to encompass a broader definition of family. While we recognize that this is an ambitious effort, we are committed to taking the steps needed to end discrimination against the families created by lesbians and gays," Stoll said.
"Before we can successfully pass legislation supporting our families, we must first educate the general public. They have to be told that many lesbians and gay men are involved in long-term relationships built of love, trust and mutual support," she continued.
The primary goals of the registry will be as an educational tool to increase the visibility of lesbian and gay families and to recapture the term "family" from the right wing. Beyond its utility as an educational tool, the National Family Registry will provide an alternative "institution" to conventional marriages, providing recognition and support in the lesbian and gay communities for the relationships that are forged within it.
"It is clear that the general public has not yet moved to the point where it is willing to affirm lesbian and gay families," McFeeley commented. "What we can do with the registry is educate the public so that they will understand that many lesbian and gay people have families which are as important to us as the families of heterosexual people are to them," he continued.
Plans for the organization of the registry are currently underway. Lesbians and gay men who would like to participate should contact Kathleen Stoll at HRCF in Washington, 202-6284160. HRCF hopes to launch the National Family Registry on February 14, 1990, Valentine's Day. ▼
